Witch Makeup

I was part of the team that created this witch makeup for an independent feature film titled The Sticks.

The makeup has 6 pieces; a foam latex cowl and 5 encapsulates silicone appliances.

I sculpted a rudimentary block out and Nick Bellemore did the rest of the sculpture. I created the ears for the sculpture by molding and casting my father's ears.

Myself, Nick, and Jason Ward made the molds for the silicone pieces, and I did the castings from them. I molded, cast, seamed, and pre-painted the foam latex cowl as well as punched the hairs into it.

Nick did the application of the makeup to the actor's face. I did the makeup on the actors hands to match Nick's work.

Animatronic Ninja Turtle

An animatronic mask and latex gloves I created for the local comedy group, Late night at the Plaza, for a digital short entitled Middle Aged Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The mask is a latex slush cast with a polyurethane under skull. It contains 6 servos and is controlled wirelessly via a PS4 controller. The mouth is controlled by the performer.

There was an extremely limited budget for this project so the same mask was repainted and reused for each of the four turtles.

Quick foam masks were pulled from the original mold to be used in a wide shot at the end of the short.

Popcorn Stove

I was tasked with building this special effect gag for the television show Under the Banner of Heaven. In the scene a character dumps an entire bag of popcorn kernels into a pot. The kernels explode everywhere until they cover the pot with a lid.

I created this effect by attaching an air mover to a pipe through the bottom of a pot. Part of the oven below was used as a hopper for popcorn. An air blade at the base of the hopper was used to keep the popcorn moving so the pipe would not get clogged. The air blade and air mover were connected to a dive tank stored in the other side of the oven and the entire rig was controlled remotely with a solenoid valve.

Joe Pickett Props

I have had the opportunity to build props and puppets on contract through Bleeding Art Industries for the television show Joe Pickett. The following are some examples of those props and will contain spoilers for the show.

Emu Puppets

I worked on a team to create two full sized emu puppets. The first had functioning legs controlled by rods connected to a puppeteer's feet and rods to control the head movement. The second was just a body. The head was a hand puppet controlled by the actor getting attacked by the emu.

I did the foam and fabric on the bodies and the feather work on both puppets as well as other various things including on set wrangling of the puppeteer.

Dead Ferret Prop

I created this dead ferret prop by sculpting the head in super sculpey and casting the ears from silicone to give them flexibility. The fur on the head is hand laid with tweezers row by row. The body is an antique ferret pelt provided by the prop master that I added silicone gore to.

Eagle Puppet

I was in charge of the feathers for this puppet, painting, trimming, and attaching them. The puppet was augmented by CGI in the final episode.

Exploded Ferret Props

I created these exploded ferrets very quickly from fake fur and silicone.

Dead Emu Props

For a pile of dead emus, I sculpted and molded an emu leg. I also molded the existing sculpture of the head and then cast as many parts as possible out of foam and painted the castings, including a few silicone heads.

I also sculpted and painted a silicone emu leg based off the original puppet's leg that was to be covered in fake blood.
